We are both history buffs and big fans of DeCaprio and Eastwood and were anticipating a multi-faceted, complex powerhouse - a bio-drama of the conflicted and paranoid yet brilliant Hoover. What we found was a confused mess! The film only skimmed through the political atmosphere of the time Hoover came into power, touched on explanations for Hoover's conflicted sexuality, and basically ignored the corruption he saw and tried to root out in later years. More importantly that Hoover was a leader in investigative procedure and science was almost a side-joke!
Interesting story with strong performances - especially by Hill! Although not a baseball fan myself my husband clued me in to the history - it's all accurate. The behind the scenes interaction was interesting - the statistics of winning honestly fascinating. A bit long - would have been crisper had they cut about 20 minutes.
Along the lines of "Crash"- you have numerous stories converging in a very realistic example of massive, rapid epidemic in today's very small world. The movie gets inside how the average person on the street is affected, how the Dr's and research scientists respond, how the medical & health bureaucracies becomes involved. There are people at every level who would rather follow protocol and play is safe or are simply trying to survive but among them are the heroes.
This movie "just missed." The casting was great in some areas and poor in others - Mirren was completely wasted. According to my personal expert (hubby) the story was accurate but the characters flat and unconvincingly weak & conflicted as Mossad agents of that era. Without the in depth knowledge of the facts I found the story poorly paced. They could have done so much more focusing on the psychology of the situation and the interaction between the young agents and the elderly Nazi doctor (who was brilliantly played).
The movie was great - fast paced legal drama with enough twists and turns to keep you interested. McConaughey returns to a grown-up role and reminds you he can actually act! The other actors did a great job - Macy (always a favorite) was wonderful. Looking forward to the next movie in the series!
This movie was beautifully acted - a very personal snapshot of the British royal family during a few critical months in early 20th century. Surprisingly humorous and very personal. Colin Firth was simply amazing - Helena Bonham Carter perfect - Timothy Spali brilliant!
Bridges did an incredible job as did the young actress Hailee Steinfeld. My husband is a real John Wayne fan and he said Bridges did such a good job you forgot that John Wayne even played it! The language style is old-fashioned and takes a few minutes to get used to but it suite the era nicely. Damon clearly had fun with hie role but it was not his best work. Great family movie!
To have made the final harry Potter book into one movie would have necessitated editing so many powerful plot-building, character-defining scenes it would have trivialized the entire epic ending. This movie, in that it is only the first part of the last book, is exactly what it should have been... growing tension between Good and Evil. Many seemingly weak and underestimated characters show amazing strength and courage. Evil appears more and more desperate - on the verge of spiraling out of control. And our heroes overcome their individual weaknesses and inner demons as they continue.... BRAVO.
Great, edge-of-your-seat, realistic action flick with personable characters you can root for. Yes, predictable to a degree but what film isn't these days? And they did not fill it with unnecessary fluff and side-stories - just a good movie with good acting!
Well, the first scene was pretty good. The next 75 minutes were predictable and slow... the characters themselves were boring, dumber than bricks. A couple of nice snapshots - like the 5 second scene where the bank robbers climb out of the car in their nun costumes eye-to-eye with a parked cop - were all it had to offer. Affleck obviously got into shape but his acting has certainly been better. This movie can't hold a candle to The Departed.
