What a great film! The tension built over the entire film with us all rooting for our favorites (and it seems to me we were all behind Ryan) The last part with them each singing their "showpiece" aria was like watching the Olympics. WOW! How do they do that? And it was great to hear of the contestants' continuing successes and then the tragic final note which left us all devasted. I do wish the following interview with Rene, Susan and Thomas had acknowledged this first instead of launching into personal reminiscences. But all and all it was inspiring!!
Here's another luxurious new production from the Met. Clearly the management there is trying to reach a new audience using production standards more friendly to a younger audience, such as video imaging, Cirque de Soliel staging, etc. It all proves to be immensely entertaining and makes Berlioz's composition - technically more a concert piece than an opera - come to life on the stage. Fortunately Maestro Levine has not allowed them to short-change the music and the magnificent singing, particularly of the devil and the huge chorus, is as impressive as the acrobatics.
What could be more lavish than opening night at the Met? And the goings-on on stage are only half the fun. Rene Fleming was magnificent in each of the three acts she sang - one each in Italian, French and German. The Met is still feeling its way in these telecasts and the shots of viewers sitting in Times Square in the middle of the singing were distracting. The spontaneous applause in the movie theater showed though that the local audience was really having a great time. I look forward to the rest of the series!
What's with these guys who take comics SO seriously? This flick has more violent scenes than "Saving Private Ryan" and even more philosophizing than explosions. Do we really need to be lectured by cartoon characters? Inappropriate for all ages but most of all for those naive to imagine they have just seen a film with something to say.
