If this movie was meant to recapture the spirit of the original, it missed the mark. It's off to a solid start, capturing the struggles of talented students who have worked hard to gain entry into this tough performing arts school. That's where the threads unravel and the movie hops and skip between stories to the point you no longer care about them. Maybe it was the theatre I was in, but the sound quality was way below par which hurt my opinion of the film. Ensemble dance numbers left me wanting for those WOW moments that never materialized. Naturi Naughton and Asher Brook are standouts ... and they just jumped off the launching pad. If you're an artist, you'll still appreciate the struggles and a few good numbers.
I was disappointed by this movie because it turned out to be more a cute 'message' film, then a comedy about the relationship between Mary and Steve. In a theathre with 30 others, I was the only one laughing, and only a couple of times. It had funny moments, but the world is full of off-beat people, and that's always been okay ... so a script/movie about one off-beat girl just seemed contrived and rehashed. Thomas Hayden Church is the best part of this movie!
A fan of the leads, I was excited to see this movie, but it fell a little flat. Much of the settings seem dark and dreary and detracted from the majical story. Still, I think it's one of the better movies I've seen about time travel -- and the director did a great job transporting us through time and place, and gracefully telling a story which by its nature is disjointed. Good acting and I enjoyed it for the life-affirming story that it is.
WOW - great story telling and, although billed as a sci-fi film, this truth is probably nearer than we think. I was fascinated by the special effects and the realism with which this new world is thrown at us. More stunning is the starkness of man's "inhumanity" and inability to reign in our self destructive behavior. This portrait of greed, wealth and power makes some shameful assessments of society and social values. But, there will be redemption. And there will be survivors - it's just not known in what form they will exist. See it. Think about it. And be entertained by the spectacle.
Aptly titled, there was a lot of funny and a lot of tragedy in this film. It was the poignant movie I expected to see with a great cast of characters (really!) [finally Rogen takes a departure from his one-dimensional overweight lovable lug persona] -- but I became disinterested after the 2 hour mark. Scenes w/Mann & Bana were too long (where's the editor?) To spite the scenes better left on the cutting room floor - Sandler strikes just the right tone and delivers a performance you'll remember. This is probably one of Apatow's better efforts and my favorite to date. If you like stories of self-inspection, introspection, foregiveness and redemption -- you won't be disappointed.
I thorough enjoyed this frightening film -- and I was actually FRIGHTENED. The lead here is menacing, cunning and manipulative, as well as physically violent and she plays it masterfully. The level of intensity was perfectly plotted to the end. Good acting all around and the characters uncover a fear most people have: you know something's wrong, and you don't see it or can't convince others of it until it just plain too late. I never looked at my watch during this movie!
I'm on the fence about this film. After seeing so many wonderful characature-like/over-the-top performances by Depp, this lower-key gangster movie left me wanting for the other Johnny. It had it's moments, but the pace was a little slow & felt average in terms of storytelling/filmmaking. Dillinger was a notorious criminal in his time - but the movie lacked enough period content (I never felt transported into the lives of these characters) to portray just how menacing he was, THEN. Marion Cotillard gave a wonderfully understated performance. All around, the movie didn't really 'gel' for me and the whole didn't equal the sum of its parts.
I was hopeful for some raw comedy, but this entire movie produced a measly 2 laughs and a slight chuckle. I could barely sit through it and thought about leaving the theatre numerous times. I like edgy comedy but this was plain gross and I grew tired of repeated/extended/non-funny scenes of male nudity. Stunning to me that this could pass for a main stream summer comedy .... because just about every other movie out there will be better than this. Skip it.
I didn't think I would enjoy this movie as much as I did! Lots of big laughs and a solid look at Vegas, the bawdy, bad and the sinful. This group of "average guys" hits every snag in the book, and fortunately they survive it so we can laugh at them one more time! A goofy bunch of misfits taking a try at Vegas - a familiar theme there. A great sumemtime adventure, and a ride that I'm glad I jumped on. Ladies, if you're on the fence about this one - I say "GO!"
Funny and heartfelt, Reynolds and Bullock play it for laughs - with a touch of sincerity when needed. The connection between the leads is made only when the tech tracking gadgets and city-induced pressures are removed ... and simplicity gives us a modern-age romance that just might survive the deadlines and deals of the real world. Great to see Betty White on screen again and breathtaking cinematography. It's formualic, but I didn't really care - it was just fun.
