The Happening never should have happened. I spent 90 minutes watching a plethora of bad peripheral actors and poorly delivered dialogue -- only to be more let down by a an ending the left me thinking "who cares?" I was thankful to be leaving the theatre in just 90 minutes. Shyamalan might do well to find material that actually works, instead of trying to force-feed creepiness to us where none exists. During this viewing, 3 other movie-goers shouted out loud their distaste for the film! I think that says it all. If not for Mark Wahlberg, I doubt you'd fill more than 4 seats per show. An underdeveloped plot, sloppy story line and failure to deliver any kind of comprehensive ending makes this film nearly unwatchable. Your DVD player won't like it much either. If you want to be scared - just go to the gas pump.
I checked my watch 6-7 times, wishing this movie would end. I had high hopes which were dashed by a thoroughly contrived script that left me wanting. The story line was tiresome and the performances seemed forced, esp. [the usually good] Hugh Jackman - who can be caught "acting" his way through the entire film. I didn't find Ewan McGregor's performance any more believable. Had Michelle Williams' character been better developed, it would have made a far better movie. Save your money.
Great cast who deliver solid performances through [mostly] well-developed characters. Pace of the film was spot-on : the story might have gotten lost in the "Vegas" scenes - but it didn't. I wasn't on the edge of my seat, but I was wholly interested -and satisfied when the credits rolled. Well done! I'm recommending it to friends.
