Diplomacy in the Streets

DiCaprio and Crowe give excellent performances and save a few glaring miscalculations (a romance in public with a local girl for an American operative isn't realistic) the film sets the tone of the REAL war - the one with the money, the power, and the underhanded - and the game each runs for him/herself. The rules are different and you engage the enemy or die at their hand. The twists in the film are heady and thrilling and give credence to those who try to stay one step ahead and sacrifice their personal lives for something greater. No nice bow around this one; but that's war.

Best Camera Movement

Best Camera Movement is the award this film would win. Mind you that the camera work doesn't SAVE this movie, it inhibits it. I couldn't tell if any of the acting was good because I was so tired of the camera-induced naseau and the screaming. I was completely distracted from "the story" .... but I think that's the point. Without enough of a story, you have to divert your audience. I did look over my shoulder a time or two, but that was a result of being alone in the threatre. There you have it. Alone in the threatre.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Action, Drama + A Bit of Cheese

This movie brought me all of the action and heart-racing thrill moments I could hope for, but once you realize who's pulling the strings -- it loses some of its appeal. Many of the situations are not really plausible, so buying into the idea that the government has again created its own-worst-enemy-of-the-state seems too contrived. Great camera work on the action and pallatable acting, but don't hope for more than that.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Keira the Duchess

Once again Keira Knightley captivates in another period epic. While it seems one might grow tired of her in this genre, she makes it work again with her superb delivery of this story. Ralph Fiennes also delivers a spot-on performance of a "man of few words" who ruled a kingdom and his household subjects with equal brevity and selfishness. The social norms of the day create impossible sceanrios for the women involved -- and makes one appreciate current freedoms. The story is heart-wrenching and, at times, heart-warming. You'll leave the threatre understanding the plight of the Duchess ... if not the torment of being her. The actors deliver some of the best performances on screen this year. See it.

Great 'Nights'

I got more than I expected from this film - a good story *yes*, excellent performances *yes*, but also a realism and honesty that are rarely seen in the love stories presented us on screen. Gere and Lane's characters show us that a truth can be found even in our later years when life has become more complicated, cumbersome and fragile. A relationship that sees the difficulties and gives you hope that one can still find the conviction to change, persevere and most of all, to love. These two are consumate pros and bring it to the big screen again!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Delightfully Fun!

I'm a fan of this movie's stars - Gervais, Leoni and Kinnear - but this vehicle is effortlessly driven by a sublime Ricky Gervais. His character, a quirky witty "every man" who can't break free of his own internal trappings, becomes hilariously illiuminated when he unexpectedly falls for a woman with whom he cannot connect. Gervais' verbal rants, blunders and priceless facial expressions had the audience roaring. The forced story line can be forgiven when the laughs are so huge! I hope there's a prequel or a sequel.

go see The House Bunny. Anna Faris can definitely open a film, but keeping this one afloat for long might prove challenging. It has some great laughs and gags, and some flops too. All a bit formulaic, but Faris is charming and strikes just the right tone to wind up a mother bunny, where she could have been a dust bunny.

Teetering on a Non-Recommendation

I believe in the fundamental message of this film: Everyone Counts, Everyone's Vote Matters. However, I had a difficult time believing Costner's performance as a beer-swilling loser who SHOULD NOT have a custody of his young responsible daughter. The movie tries to justify his actions by tossing in a brief screen moment showing us that his ex-wife is a worse parent than he. Depsite the storyline short comings, Ms. Carroll delivers an excellent performance and the movie's end - despite not wrapping up with a Hollywood bow on it - is thoughtful and eloquent. If you can wade through the early bumblings, you just might appreciate it this movie. I felt a sense of pride in the American "system" and in the ever-present hope for redemption.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

If you're an action film lover, you won't be dissapointed! This movie, while feeilng a little contrived (I'd recommend killing McAvoy's narrative on his 'state of being') produced some of the best gun-slinging action sequences ever brought to the big screen. You'll find the omni-present double-cross, packaged in one of the most fashionable and stylistic films of its kind. The live bullet sequences are quite spectacular and thrilling. McAvoy is to be commended for his efforts here - in particular his revenge finale scene which I found mind-blowing! Bravo. Bravo.

Plain and simple F-U-N at the movies! This duo should be back on the big screen in no time. Spot on performances from both Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway who kept the spirit of their original characters but made them palatable for today's audience. I should add that they accomplished this with the bumbling style that makes Get Smart a such an enjoyable romp ! A film the 40 & 50-somethings and their kids both will enjoy. Congratuations on creating what is sure to be a new franchise that will keep us all laughing. Great gaafs, witty dialog (don't miss some of the great one-liners by paying attention to only the characters expressions!), and all the good v. double-crossing evil you came to see.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
