Not perfect, but pretty darn good

The world imagined by James Cameron is fascinating and compelling. I saw it in 3-D, and his use of 3-D was used much less gimicky than you often see. However, 3-D technology is still not completely convincing (some of the effects end up looking like flat cutouts against the background), so I think I would prefer to have seen it in the traditional format.
Depending on how you look at it, the plot is either full of cliches, or resonates with references to American culture and history -- shades of cowboys and Indians, Pocahontas, Vietnam. But I would definitely recommend it.
