This movie had some of the humor and light that was missing from the first film. The novels are not without some jokes now and then, the first film was humorless, dark and did nothing to endear Kristen Stewart to die hard novel fans. This time around Chris Weitz gives the audience several chuckle moments because even in the book they are ridiculous. You can love a film and still poke fun...that happened here. I was even impressed with Kristen Stewart this time around. I can begrudgingly see her as Bella and she actually smiled!
Robert Pattinson was spot on , his humorous comments were wonderfully balanced by his moody, teenage angst. He was one of the elements that rang true. We weren't treated to a Bella to match this Edward. Kristen Stewart has one face and one emotion, squint eyed broodiness. There was no change in her expression from beginning to end. Poor Pattinson was acting the heck out of his Edward to have all of his energy sucked into the black hole void that was Kristen Stewart. Sadly, the rest of the cast get shoved into very small boxes and really serve more of a cameo rather than any real purpose. We can only hope that Stewart learns how to act before the sequel.
With Guillermo del Torro at the helm, this movie could be nothing but stunning. The visual aesthetic is nothing short of captivating...I just wish the story had the substance to match. I am a Hellboy fan and I believe the characters became lost in the pageantry on the screen. This amazing visual treat needed the screen play to match.
That said, the action in the film was spectacular and my children were rapt from the beginning frame. I really was looking forward to this installment and left the theater feeling ho hum about it.
Kind of like Pirates of the Caribbean Two...it felt like the film trailer to a better story.
This movie gave a nod to the Hulk that I grew up with. Edward Norton was as quiet and unassuming as Bill Bixby giving the character heart. I was on the edge of my seat and I had to close my eyes!
That said, maybe I was one of the few who didn't mind the first Hulk. Though seeing Lou Farrigno made me clap my hands and I am happy to have this dvd on my shelf
I took the kids to see this on a snowy, spring break day and we all enjoyed it thoroughly. My 10 year-old son wanted more exposition on the missing mother story line, but we all laughed out loud at something. I would have liked to see Jodie Foster's character help Nim a bit more on the island, but her portrayal of a "borderline agoraphobic had me in stitches. I would definitely go to the matinee, not many movies lately have been worth the $7.00-9.00 you pay at the theater, but for younger kids, this is a good one. I have sat through some pretty painful kids' movies and I enjoyed this one.
