The Hurt Locker is to the Iraq war what All Quiet On the Western Front was to WWI, Objective Burma and Saving Private Ryan were to WWII, Fixed Bayonets and Port Chop Hill were to the Korean War, and Platoon and Steel Metal Jacket were to Viet Nam. Visually the film looks like a documentary, but dramatically it probes deep into the psyche of the soldier. It deals with two distinct premises: the daily coping with the fear and anxiety of death and the alternative, the insatiable addiction to the hormonal high. Detailed and well choreographed scenes provide a glimpse into the horrors that few Americans can even imagine. Superb performances, good script, and excellent cinematography overcome some questionable editing. Overall a triupmph.
