I've walked out of only two movies --this and Strawdogs. I know this is a much superior movie --in terms of its story and the fact that its characters are beyond the usual waspy-Hollywood types. It may even convey a truth about a harsh reality in countries where poverty is common and painfully despairing. But this was much more violence than I could stomach and it was certainly more than a "R" rating. It should have been rated NC-17 --or maybe been given a new rating of its own, one that truly alerts viewers to the unceasing and repelling level of violence. How about a "VX" ?
While this animation-for-kids may have many of the staples of the usual child movie fare, it has much more. It is a simple story that is WELL told, without becoming too simpleton. It's like a David Weisner book (Flotsam, Sector 7) --choosing words and images that enable the viewer to 'read' himself/herself into the meaning of events. And there are at least three 'heros' --who occasionally make bad decisions. Everything is not good-evil, black-white; it's often subjective, and gray, but in the end, everyone (except the initially kind stranger) is happy.
