This satire was fun -- how can't you enjoy fun-poking at this mediocre, self-important, simplistic president -- but not as much fun as I expected to have. It focuses more on W's father (who disapproves of his son's maturation) and less on qualities that affect the public, such as the disastrous conduct of the Iraq War, the trashing of the constitution, etc. Also the movie is a bit frantic with rapid cutting, whereas draggy in general pace through much of the movie. Still, the satirization of the current president is enjoyable. And some of the characterizations are fantastic, especially Richard Dreyfuss as Cheney the Svengali. So, not as much fun as I expected, but still enjoyable.
Ed Harris stars in, directed, and co-wrote this western, and it's pretty darn good. But also slow-ish. Harris and Viggo Mortensen are two dour, laconic lawmen-for-hire. They get hired to eliminate the rapacious Jeremy Irons and his bad of thugs. This movie has an interesting plot, good characterizations, a satisfying contest between good and evil, as you would expect of a western. Its pace is stately, sometimes too stately. The up and down romantic relation with Renee Zellweger stretches believability, but, all told, this was a good yarn and an enjoyable movie.
Not quite excellent but still very much fun. This movie is in the screwball comedy vein. The acting is quite enjoyable, with characters sliding between normal and frantic. Clooney and Malkovich were especially enjoyable. And the plot, though improbable (what else?) speeds along with twists and surprises. The Coen Brothers know how to take you on a jolly good ride. I enjoyed this one more than I expected to.
This is another fine stately British period piece, based on the Evelyn Waugh novel. An Oxford student from the anonymous classes gets introduced into the icy Catholic family of the fabulously manored old money class. Can he break through the chilly, constrained family dynamics? Stately and slow but beautifully acted. Worth a trip to the cinema.
Too long by far. Too many plot turns. Some pursuit sequences are so confusing you can't tell who is chasing whom. Too much of a shoot-em-up, blow-em-up, crash-em-up. Heath Ledger's performance is really good, but this movie is a mess. When did Batman movies quit being fun to watch?
The animation is great. The "facial" expressions are charming. There is an environmental message. But there is not that much narrative variety, and I got ready for it to end. Toy Story is better.
This is a silly shoot-em-up, with more than necessary violence and profanity. The action is hyped annoyingly with rapid cuts and a jittery camera. There is a bit of humor, but it doesn't rescue this movie. Angelina Jolie's lines would have fit on a postcard. (Y-a-w-n)
As movies about comic book heroes go, this one was very, very good. A fine rock-em, sock-em adventure with cool special effects and a cast of real pros. The story line is interesting, the acting is very good, and that ironman suit is a knockout!
This movie was slow enough to become tedious. It strains for humor. I have seen several movies now from the Jude Apatow stable, and in all of them a beautiful woman (or more than one) falls for a nebbish-y guy. OK, that happens sometimes, but not this often. This formula isn't going to succeed too much longer. And I'd like a little more depth in my movies, thank you.
