Knockout action/suspense movie

I really enjoyed this movie. It clips along, has its share of action, is full of suspense, and also has Liam Neeson, who is always enjoyable to watch. This movie is faster than Neeson's previous outing with "Taken," and that movie is maybe the better one, but this movie is quite entertaining. Sure, the movie has some implausible or far-fetched elements -- where did she learn to drive backwards like that?! -- but if you go to an action movie you expect a bit of that. The plot twist that "explains" the movie was a bit of a surprise.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Desperation begets reflection

Based upon actual events, the movie portrays the ordeal of a nice but overly macho and cocky hiker, Aron Walston, who winds up in a pickle when a fall in the wilderness of Canyonlands, Utah lands him deep in a crevice with his right arm pinned under a rock. He remains positive, but cannot escape reviewing his life. Eventually he cuts himself free, at the loss of half his forearm. This act is depicted, but not as a gorefest. It seems impossible to have an interesting move running to an hour and a half about these events, but director Danny Boyle succeeds. Ultimately a positive movie about a man in a terrible situation whose spirit prevails.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Well-acted but grim

I well-acted but grim movie with many ironies. The lead Uxbal lives beyond the fringes of the law. He hires illegal aliens to make counterfeit merchandise in Barcelona, but he is protective towards them. His estranged wife has lost control of her life; he can't stand her behavior but he still feels some love for her and is too decent to be violent with her. He loves his children but doesn't set such a good example for them. Much is bleak, and tragic, too. An unusual story, well-told, a bit long.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Wonderful film!

The English prince who would become George VI, and guide his country through WW2, was a stammerer. That's not good, for someone who must give stirring speeches. This movie follows his remediation at the guidance of a speech therapist who was an Aussie commoner, and an unconventional speech therapist as well. A very well-done movie, touching and poignant. The two leads, Colin Firth as the prince and Geoffrey Rush as the therapist, are super. Don't miss this one.

Dark, dark, dark

This movie may remind you of Polansky's films "Repulsion" and "The Tenant," in that one watches a character slowly lose their touch with reality and descend into madness. That said, this movie is very well done, and imaginative, with good performances all the way around. Natalie Portman's dancing is surprisingly skillful. From the start, we see her character is insecure, conflicted, and imagining things that are not real. Director Daniel Aronofsky continues his fascination with unusual people, obsession, and odd stories. This movie is not for all tastes.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Excellent western

This latest Coen Brothers movie is an excellent western. The performances of Jeff Bridges, Hailee Steinfeld, and Matt Damon are all very good. The dialogue is old-fashioned and often droll, much as Charles Dickens' dialogues are often droll. As always, the Coens include a bit of mordant humor. There is plenty of gunplay, but this is not a rootin' tootin' western with heroes championing over badmen. It is more a bit of a character study. Very enjoyable.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Great boxing story

This movie is based upon the real boxer Micky Ward and his half-brother Dicky. This is a very entertaining and engrossing movie, with a colorful mix of secondary characters, including Micky's seven sisters, who are something of the Avenging Furies. Mom is even more forceful. Mark Wahlberg does fine as Micky, and Christian Bale is even better as the punchy, dreamy, motormouth brother Dicky. The fight scenes make you cringe.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Really good John Lennon biopic

This bright, emotional, and in the end poignant biopic follows John Lennon from the time as a restless, cocky schoolboy he first becomes interested in music, up to just before the band is to head off to their first gig in Hamburg. John's emotional family life swings between his free-spirited but undependable mother Julia, and the straight-laced, humorless, but ever attentive, ever dependable aunt Mimi, who actually raised him. We watch as John becomes devoted to music and his bandmates, at the expense of school. The performances are all fine. The Liverpool accent is occasionally impenetrable. Rock fans will enjoy this movie. For Beatles fans, it is a must-see.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Lots of fun

This movie is lots of fun. I doubt there can be a perkier performance than the one by Rachel McAdams. She is a never-say-die TV producer for morning news programs. She advances into the near-big time in her profession, but with the responsibility of rescuing a show. And coping with an irascible 100% news reporter, Harrison Ford, who is disgusted with morning news shows. There are a number of really good supporting performers, including Diane Keaton. A very enjoyable and likable movie. Why miss it?

This movie is super. A love story about a charming, seductive guy and a delicious, independent gal who meet and couple and fall in love (of course). Both leads are very appealing and give excellent performances. This movie is plenty sexy, also sweet and tender, and lots of fun. See it with the one you love, or one you want to love.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
