Truth be told, it was very, very rushed. I wish they would've taken more time with it and included some essential elements of the plot from the book that were cut out altogether...so many things left unexplained, so many characters left hanging in the balance. I wouldn't have minded if they had tacked on an hour or so to get it right. At just over 2 hours it was the shortest of the movies, and it felt that way. Ron and Hermione felt a little too relegated to the background. A little too ineffectual, for my tastes, given their importance in the overall story. Visually it is striking, and what they did get right, they did very well. Kudos to the Snape backstory and to Alan Rickman.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Intriguing, but tame.

For the most part, I liked the film. It had a few generally creepy little frights and freak-outs. The story borrows heavily from Poltergeist, or the mythology that there is 'another realm' and that children can either travel or be taken there, etc. I liked the two main malevolent antagonists that were explored.
The tonal shift midway through is a little jarring, but ultimately it brought some fun to the piece. Lin Shaye's performance is the highlight of the film.
I like Rose Byrne a lot, but she is a much better actress than what this movie asked her to do. Patrick Wilson, I'm sorry to say, but the guy is a total bore. Every movie he is in, he is the same, looks the same, does the same thing. He is the male Jennifer Aniston--pretty to look at, but there is nothing interesting about his acting. At least in 'Little Children' he was naked 80% of the time....
Overall, the thing I liked best about it, as I did with Poltergeist, is that I believe in the notions and the 'worlds' that the film purports. I find the subject material intriguing, so the film did give me a thrill.
The cinematography was astonishing. I've seen dozens of films about the ocean, but never one quite like this. It was breathtaking.
I wished that some of the sea animals would have been explored more. Sometimes the camera caught something and then there would quickly be a dissolve to something else.
Unlike a review I read here on movietickets.com, I DID enjoy the references to evolution. I don't believe that we were just plopped down here on the "7th day" dumb enough to then be adulterated by a conniving snake. Ugh. We don't need the hokey God stuff in our oceans, thank you.
