Probably the worst adaptation with the best effects. They went on to the point of boredom on the unimportant, and made Cliffs Notes of the key story elements. No time for chemistry to develop between Harry and Ginny, pieces that should be suspenseful just tossed in viewers faces and changes that will only complicate the major mythology as we move forward into the final books. I'm saddened for what the last two movies will bring.
This movie, while generally enjoyable, was kind of a let down. Parts of the plot were pretty weak and a little bit slow, and wow. Terrible wigs. I liked the fight scenes (obviously Jet Li/Jackie Chan was pretty cool, albeit early in the movie), and Michael Angarano seems like a nice enough kid to care about. Maybe the problem for me was that from the get go, a number of "present time" characters had terrible, fake New York accents. Making it worse, the movie is set in SOUTH BOSTON. Does NO ONE know what at a Boston accent sounds like? Hearing the main character say, "Yes, I'm from South Boston" instead of "I'm from Sahthie, and it's wickid haaahd" made my ears bleed every time. That said, if I were 13 and had never lived in Boston, I'm sure it would be my favorite movie ever.
I'm sure it would have helped to be baked when seeing this movie, but I wasn't for the last one, and I still loved it. John Cho and Kal Penn turn in charming performances, and I got a kick out of the political undertones. While it definitely had its moments ("It looks like Osama Bin Laden's beard!"), this lacked the consistent wackiness of the first one that originally drew me in. I laughed and smiled through a lot of it... but less pining for girls, more tokes, please! And while I realize the movie isn't called "NPH Rides Again," I would have loved more NPH. His scenes were clearly the highlight of the movie.
While many of the funny lines were spoiled in the trailers, overall there were some great laughs. It was completely charming from beginning to end. Much like the Apatow Gang's other movies, I'm sure it will get even funnier with subsequent viewings.
