Storyline was a bit hokey, but otherwise, this is an action-packed love story. Very cute, and very well done.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

...but we all know that even competent directors have issues shoving a 20 episode TV season into one movie, and although Shyamalan may have studied the material he made a movie on, he is far from competent.
First issue? The movie moved WAY too fast, and so many important things were cut out (Kyoshi Warriors, anyone?).
Secondly, they shouldn't have had Katara narrate the whole thing. There are better ways to explain everything.
However, the movie had a few redeeming qualities.
1) THE MUSIC SCORE: As a musician, I keep track of a few of the music scorers out there, and James Newton-Howard is no exception. After his teaming with Hans Zimmer writing the music for the new Batman movies, JNH has a much better grasp of powerful brass use, and most definitely used it here. The music score is great enough to stand on its own, and I would be shocked if the score didn't get an Oscar nod.
2) SPECIAL EFFECTS: Granted, the 3D effects were little to none, but I'm talking about the bending effects, here. They were exactly what I would have envisioned if you put A: tLA into a real life situation.
3) AANG VS. FIRE NATION SHIPS: This scene made the movie for me, hands down. Aang goes into his avatar state and begins bending this giant wall of water towards the Fire Nation ships that are attacking the walls of the Water Tribe city. The editors of the movie make the BRILLIANT decision to cut ALL SOUND for the scene, and leave it at just the picture/effects and JNH's music score. This was the most powerful scene in the entire movie.
4) AZULA'S CAMEO: Although she was only on screen for about 15 seconds, the actress playing her was perfect, especially in twisted mannerism. The last view of the movie is Azula giving a twisted grin to her father about the opportunity to destroy the Avatar. Good casting, there.
Long story short, unless you want to see a pretty picture with beautiful music that won't make much more sense than that, don't go see this movie. If they producers of the movie don't switch directors to make the sequels (if they even get green lighted at all), I'd be astounded.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Exactly what my title says. The previews made the movie out to be a more hard-core display of villainy, but the movie itself is a play on how family and love can fix everything for all parties...well, except for the movie's real villain, of course. Good movie, and I would definitely suggest it to my friends, but the movie is not for everyone.
The first thing that I noticed wasn't even about the movie--it was about the people in the theater with me. I think that there were only 5 children (10 years old or younger) in the theater. The rest of the people were all older, and it seemed to go along with how old Andy was in the movie. I thought that was pretty cool.
The movie itself was fantastic. It was the expected Toy Story adventure, except now the alternative to being mutated by Sid/left behind was getting completely destroyed, giving the film a darker tone. I'm pretty sure I cried for the last 20 minutes of the movie (good cry, mind you :D). Despite the slightly upsetting and bittersweet parts, the movie was hilarious--everyone in the theater was rolling with laughter--and it also got a standing ovation. My props go to Randy Newman, the music composer, who was able to reinvent the old music for the new movie, giving it a fresh new appeal.
I would recommend this movie not just to a friend, but to EVERYONE--kids, teens, adults, and seniors, and most especially, everyone's inner child. We've all been (or will be) where Andy is, leaving home for the first time, and the story will hit home with all of us.
This was my parents' first movie to see in 3D, and the family agreed that it was a great one to start out with.
The comedy was great! However, there are now so many "main" characters that I felt the entire movie was a little rushed with no screen time for the majority of our favorites. Other than that, it was a great way to end the Shrek series, and families and kids WILL NOT be disappointed with this movie.
Also, I would like to add that Harry Gregson-Williams (film music writer) is absolutely brilliant and did a fantastic job on this movie. :D
