To paraphrase a line from the movie itself, this movie was much less much than I hoped it would be. As an Alice in Wonderland fanatic, the idea of Tim Burton and crew taking it on said there was potential, but deep down I was hesitant to be excited.
I'm glad I kept my expectations low, because Burton failed to find a way to balance the bright cartooniness of Wonderland with the darker storyline he was trying to present. There was no contrast of the former Wonderland with the war-devastated "present" Underland.
That said, the Red Queen and the dormouse were fantastic. The other characters lacked development.
Touching ... sweet ... funny ... yet serious all at the right moments. Exactly what we have come to expect from Pixar. The use of music throughout the film was perfect. and the short at the beginning is one of the best yet. If you went to this movie expecting straight humor, then you will be disappointed; but if you are expecting something with depth and different things for different ages, this movie is for you.
