What an Adventure!

Being a fan of Baz Luhrmann, Hugh Jackman, and Nicole Kidman, I was anxious to see this movie. It did not disappoint. It is a bit long, but you don't really notice it that much, since there is always something interesting going on. There is plenty of romance, true, but there is a lot more to this movie than that: it is an epic tale of love, greed, prejudice and revenge, all set along the amazing backdrop of Australia. Very well done. Hugh Jackman is more than just sexy as the Drover, and David Wenham is chilling. It was great to see Bryan Brown and other Aussie actors we don't often get to see, like Jack Thompson. This is one I may want to see again, and I rarely do that these days.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I actually went to this movie under protest, because I thought, like other reviewers here, that the way it was marketed, it wasn't my kind of humor. Little did I know. What a refreshing, unique film this is! I defy anyone not to walk out singing "Rock Me Sexy Jesus," or one of the other zippy tunes in the film. Brash, funny, unique, but with tons of heart. A truly independent work. I even got the soundtrack (has to be downloaded from amazon, but what the hey?). This film hits the mark in so many ways. Caution: NOT for kids!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I missed the chance to see this on stage when I was in London, so I have no basis of comparison there, but this movie makes me feel GREAT. I've seen it twice now, and both times, I left feeling wonderful. The music by Abba is so well done. When Meryl Streep sings "The Winner Takes It All," I get chills. I can only hope she gets an Academy Award for this role. The guys don't sing all that well, but I found myself not caring much. It's a sweet story that will make you laugh and cry and want to dance in the aisles. If you want to get out of a funk, this movie is the best medicine you can take.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Disappointed

I thought this was going to be a lot more entertaining than it was. With a dream cast, it should have been captivating from beginning to end, but I found my attention wandering. I guess expected more from Woody Allen. Part of it was that the voice over narration of a man talking about the experiences of two women was not a good fit. It didn't have to be one of the women in the film, but it felt, like so many movies about women, like a man telling us what our experience is. If you loved "Match Point," you'll probably think this movie is a work of genius. If, like me, you fell asleep watching it, wait for this one to come to cable.
No, I do not recommend this movie.
