I Want to Believe

"I Want to Believe" is a good subtitle. It's not quite as strong a sentiment as "I Believe", so it fits a movie that's just not that strong.
But it was good enough, and it didn't let me down. I probably have a very low story-continuation bar after the Star Wars prequels (I hate them, in my Star Wars universe they do not exist). So maybe, being braced for disappointment, the movie could shine a little bit more.
For a Monster-of-the-Week story, it wasn't the best. The villains and anti-heroes weren't great. I don't think Amanda Peet did a good job of acting, although Xzibit was alright (bit of a one-note character, but he played that note well). The story, the plot twists, none of it was as good as some of the best episodes, but it didn't feel like a TV movie that was trying to hard. It was better than that.
As a fan I was probably most concerned that Carter and crew would have done something awful to Mulder and Scully and their relationship. I was relieved that, despite some direct discussions, the backstory of what was going on between the end of the series and the movie was still vague enough that I wasn't angry, or disappointed. After the commercials I was afraid that M&S had been living apart and not even in communication - after the movies I am actually not sure what their lives were! Which is perfect, because it leaves me free to believe what I want to believe, and interpret the movie in a way that works for me.
It had it's weaknesses, and the strengths weren't strong enough to overcome them and really raise the bar on this movie. I am sure it could have been better - but I am so very relieved because it also could have been awful. So it was good enough, it was worth the ticket, it was worthy of the X-Files although it certainly won't be remembered among the best.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
