J.J. Abrams did a fine job with this. It had great development of the characters and a fast-moving and engaging plot that didn't require you to ignore gaping implausibilities. There were plenty of parallels to the rest of the Trek canon for those of us who are familiar with it, but it stood on its own for non-Trekkies too. The only even minor complaint I have with it is that they failed to make as much use of Simon Pegg as Scotty as they could have.
