Touching on deep philosophical questions such as "how do I know this is reality?" this film is a combo of sophisticated heist, action, and science-fiction movie. The action never flags and the effects are mind-blowing! Seeing it in Imax is to be completely absorbed. I walked out into the streets of Manhattan expecting to see them fold like those of Paris in the dream. Takes Dreamscape a quantum leap beyond. Go see it. Twice.
Whle watching this more-than-beautiful movie in the totally immersive IMAX 3-D experience, I found myself thinking of the indigenous natives of the Amazon Rain Forest, who face similar total destruction of their finely tuned ecology every day. I also thought of John Smith and Pocahontas, "Dances With Wolves" etc. Yet, the derivative nature of the plot does nothing to reduce the immediacy of the story, or the wonderfully alien yet familiar complexity and beauty of the complete world Cameron has created. Bravo! I must see it again - a landmark in sci-fi film-making.
This follows up the first Hellboy movie as a fully-fleshed-out fantasy. Guillermo del Toro continues the vision of nature begun in "Pan's Labyrinth" and lets it go wild with the Elementals. Nice touches of wistfulness even in the midst of chaos. And the Troll Market scene can be viewed again and again to glean new insights and visions each time. It will be up there with the "Star Wars" cantina scene in movie history as having the most exotic characters per square foot!
