Lots of angst but nothing happens. A waste of a lovely Saturday afternoon.

Unclear why this story needed to be told. Hoffman and Phoenix chew the scenery (which scenery is admittedly wonderful) but none in my party saw a point to the story. The characters are all unlikeable, so what they do, or why, becomes of no interest. Almost walked out, but kept hoping something would happen to tie the numerous floating ideas into a story. It never did. Amy Adams plays the Eva Braun behind the Master's throne...SHE was scary, but miscast. Cinematography was terrific, but In sum, a waste of time and money,
Pros great actors
Cons too complex, slow, no story worth telling
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Excellent slice of life on the Ice

As a person who dreams of someday spending time on the Ice, I found this film really excellent---the underwater photography and the scenes on Erebus are amazing, and Herzog's curiosity drives him to a very creative, albeit quirky, approach to describing the very creative, albeit quirky, people who get to work there. I got the vague sense (maybe not so vague) that he thinks everybody down there is nuts, and perhaps they are, but that was somewhat disquieting. Nonetheless, a truly fine documentary.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
