So over the top it becomes completely unbelievable

Special effects were good, but not the best CGI you've seen. They are the only reason to see this movie because the plot is so thin and over the top that nothing can be taken seriously. You don't outrun an earthquake in a car, and that's the most plausible thing that happens in a 10 min sequence early in the film. If they'd dialed it back a bit, 2012 could have had the dramatic impact of other disaster films that worked. They took the most ridiculous elements of films like armageddon, day after tomorrow, volcano, deep impact et al and dialed them up 10fold. All dramatic impact is lost and it just becomes laughable. It's also about 40 minutes too long and lags in parts.
My wife and I found this movie to be hilarious. It has dozens of laugh out loud moments. Of course the premise and much of the comedy is clearly over-the-top ridiculous. You know going in that you suspend disbelief for a Will Ferrell movie. I was happy to do so because I truly enjoyed the movie. You should know that the humor is extremely vulgar, crude and sexual. There is significant nudity (including stuff you almost never see outside of pornography), graphic sex with detailed verbal description of the activity, a fair amount of violence, and tons of language more graphic than you'll hear in most other R-rated movies. I only mention this because there were a fair number of children in the theater. Right before the movie started a family came in and sat next to us. There were two children under the age of 11 in the group. This movie is rated R for a reason, and I would bet that there was consideration of a NC-17 rating when this film was being evaluated. We are fairly permissive people but I honestly do not think that any child should see this movie. It certainly should not be seen by anyone not already in high school. I know that kids grow up fast, but frankly only a complete idiot would take a child to see this movie. Do society a favor and take them to see Wall-E or something else that is suitable for kids. Save this one for a night when someone can watch your children.
