If you loved the book (and who didn't?), you will love the movie. Great ensemble cast. And, to sort of quote one of the best lines ... " It is kind (sad and funny), it is smart and it is important!" Enjoy!
It is not the best thriller ever made but it was suspenseful. Crowe , McAdams, MIrren and Affleck did a great of not overdoing the acting. Good supporting cast, too. Have recommended this film to a half dozen people since last night. The plot is a little weak at the end but you are left guessing till then. Enjoy!!
The disappointments and realities of love after forty that unfold in this movie are uncomfortable and comforting, at the same time. I particularly liked the intrusion of the cell phone on both the personal and professional level.
Through the superb acting talents of Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman (Emma more so than Dustin who's acting hasn't evolved much beyond his Graduate days) we realize that we do indeed have value as love-interests long after skin has lost its elasticity, lines are etched into our faces and our jobs have taken their toll.
There are mild twists, cliches and the screenplay won't win any awards but, all-in-all, a good night at the cinema. Even our sixteen year-old enjoyed this even-paced and touching romance.
I don't have anything more to say than already has been said about this movie. It was a work of art. Christopher Nolan did not have to prove his genius after "Memento". But he did prove he is a genius no matter how much of a budget he is given. Bravo. That said, please stop making Heath Ledger's role as the Joker a catalyst for his tragic death. Gary Oldman has confirmed that, between takes, Heath was not wallowing in the character he brilliantly created. He was a gifted actor who was given brilliant direction. Let's leave it at that and morn his too-short life. Stop weaving tabloid tales or continuing shameful marketing ploys.
