A Surprisingly Good Movie

After seeing the trailer, I thought I knew what this movie was about. Yes, it was about no strings attached but it was also more. Usually it is the guy that has the commitment problems but with a slight reversal of roles, this becomes an movie that draws you in. Fortunately, it is not all that obvious where they will end up or how they will get there. And once again a great supporting cast makes it work. Another delightful movie after a year of comic book characters.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

A Perfect Date Movie for Both Genders

Usually today's movies are either crude for the male audience or sweetly romantic for the female. Somehow this sleeper of a hit manages to provide solid gross jokes while making you something for the lead characters. Ed Helms (Hangover) plays the perfect naive small-town guy thrust into the "big" world of a convention in Cedar Rapids. John C. Reilly is the obnoxious agent with a touching story driving the smokescreen, Anne Heche is the party agent escaping a dull, dead marriage, and Isiah Whitlock Jr. (The Wire) surprises us will a small, quiet yet critical performance. The innocence and coming of age without seeming stupid or dumb really makes this movie shine. The the twist at the end provides you with a reason to come back and see it again.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Sweet & Funny

It was wonderful to see Jennifer Aniston acting at the same high comedic level that she had while doing Friends. Both she and Adam Sandler show a more mature deftness to their roles which is very refreshing and funny. Most critics don't like the movie because they don't understand relationships very well. You don't need a gun or fast car to be in love; a couple of funny kids are dangerous enough! While the supporting cast was great, the real surprise was Nicole Kidman. After all those heavy horror/angst movies she has done lately, it was great to see her comedic side. The most fun was to be in a theater full of people laughing loud and long at all the great jokes and bits. Truly the best time we have had in a long while at the movies! Go see it and then buy the DVD. Don't miss this great movie just because the clueless critics.

An Understated Romance

Two of our most excellent actors come together in this understated story of love. While just physical at first, Jamie and Maggie both begin to realize how the sum of them is greater than the parts. Hank and Oliver provide a couple of great scenes venting the frustration of the people in this industry of greed. Josh Gad provides some great comic relief as Jamie's younger brother who is also trying to find his real self. A real adult movie in these days of children's video game movies.

As most know by now, this is loosely based on a real producer. But what makes it work is a subtle script that works its way into your heart. You see what should be a predictable movie take several unexpected turns that keeps you involved and enjoying these great actors performing their craft of love. A good solid movie that touches you.

What a Fun Ride!

Now here is a movie that you can really get caught up in. It is intelligent, funny, captivating, tricky, sly, maddening, and full of high-energy special effects. Based on a limited series of three comic books from DC Comics, Red captures the pacing of comic books while being made for adult tastes. Top-notch actors revealing in their craft make for fine fun. There is a love story but not the one you think. There are action sequences galore but then this is a Bruce Willis film. And Karl Urban makes a great nemesis--but is he? You will have to see this movie to find out. Great entertainment value!

Good But Not Great

A very solid, well-acted film from Disney. Since everyone knows how it ends, this movie was about the story of getting there. The character development and pace of the movie was reminiscent of the films from the 70's--a refreshing change from the fast pace of most films. Only two items I take issue with: first, the non-race facts were wrong (see Wikipedia) and, second, they didn't spend enough time on the relationship between the owner and the horse. That said, the racing parts were top-notch! This will make a nice rental.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This is a Real Movie!

OK, the basic setup: girl meets boy, girl doesn't like self-centered boy, girl and boy keep interacting due to best friends and their baby. As godparents, they end up with the baby when the friends are killed. Now the hard part--they have to learn to work together to raise this child that they both love. The rest of the movie is wonderful, unpredictable, and full of humor and hubris. Plus a case-worker who surprises us. A real social network in action just like the real-world. No vampires or car chases but a refreshing look at love and relationships. Don't miss it!

A Surprisingly Wonderful Epic!

This, my friends, is why we go to the movies. To discover little gems of movies like "Scott Pilgrim." No matter what you believe this movie to be, it's that and more. The only reason it is not getting more press is that they don't know how to use the word "fantastic." A bit love story, a bit video game, a bit music video, and a lot of fun. While there might be a few weak moments, Michael Cera shows how versatile he can be. The rest of the cast brings it as well. You will laugh yourself silly and leave the theater with a big smile. Don't wait for the rental; see it today!

Falls Short of the Mark

Julia Roberts is a great actor and it shows here with her total immersion into this role. However, Ryan Murphy just cannot figure out how to make the movie work. Like The Color Purple, this is a difficult book to capture on the screen. The movie just wanders all over the place, giving us tantalizing glimpses of a evolving story that never seems to come together.
The male leads, especially Hadi Subiyanto, really perform well but cannot save it either. Worse of all, the ending is cliche and rushed which spoils Javier Bardem performance.
Go see it to observed Italian food consumed with love and gusto (the middle part) but don't expect much more.
No, I do not recommend this movie.
