Well the problem I have always had with movies like this- Lincoln, Apollo 13- is that if you know even just a little about history you already know the story. Those that have followed the hunt for Bin Laden or are looking for great movie making will be disappointed. The historic value of this movie may be greater in twenty years as a generation removed discovers it. The production could have been done by Lifetime.
I am a fan of the US foreign service. Those are the men and women stationed overseas living in dangerous areas without army issued flack jackets or high powered weapons. This movie gives some insight to what they face, not being able to go out to eat, going to the movies, being worried about walking down the street.
I wish Bigelow had focused more on the sacrifices those in the CIA and the embassy make everyday for us. When one agent decides to return to DC for a desk job she doesn't explain why. She doesn't go far enough to make the lead character human after the the sudden personal loss. Bigelow never fully explains why this woman was chosen by the CIA to lead the operation.
And there is the problem with making this movie. Keeping it a commercial attraction that will move women and pump up men.
It's a retelling of the story thats already been told a hundred times in newspapers and on television. Nothing here to see folks.
My friend and I were ready to get out of the house and see something. We went to Movietickets.com, and just as I hit the "purchase Tickets" button, Sandy Kanyon, came on WABC TV and ripped the movie a new one. I immediately thought twice about our choice.
This movie had lots of laugh out loud moments, lots of creative moments and lots of touching moments. What more could you ask for a summertime Friday night?
Perhaps the drug references were a bit too much for Sandy to handle but it was Woodstock not a church gathering.
Is this a movie you can wait to see on video? NO! This is a movie about the greatest gathering in American history. This is a movie you need to see in a crowded theater on a Saturday night.
Adventureland waits too long to get interesting. I didn't really care about any of the main characters until the romance comes to a head about 2/3 of the way through.
I couldn't get over the poor Michael Cera imitation that Jesse Eisenberg is forced to do throughout the movie.
Also if you didn't believe the dialogue coming out of Juno's mouth then skip Adventureland.
This movie is not just about Watergate but rather the fall of a very proud Richard Nixon.
My biggest probem is that Ron Howard turns the movie into a campy '70s film. One too many interjections of 70 icons. The silver Corvette Sting Ray, the weeping Indian PSA, the Tab soda cans. We are supposed to be focused on the story not nostalgia.
This is probably why the three twenty something girls sitting behind me were laughing through much of the movie.
Still the movie is worth seeing. But there is no need to rush, no award winning performances here. Netfliks it.
