Another one of the many Holocaust-themed movies of this season. It's hard to talk about the movie without revealing your feelings for the main character played by Kate Winslet. Her character keeps up her emotional reserve and doesn't make us privy to all of her motivations, which makes her a bit hard to care for. This isn't one of Ralph Fiennes' best roles, he could do this in his sleep. The actor who plays him as a young man is better. Lena Olin's appearance steals the show.
There are many Holocaust-themed movies this season. I want to see them all before I assess how each one worked, but this one is interesting, and worth seeing. The supporting cast includes Terence Stamp, Tom Wilkinson, Kenneth Branagh and more; and they're all worth watching. This was one of several plots initiated to kill Hitler, and it's very interesting to see these stories dramatized.
This movie does what a movie should do; makes you laugh, makes you cry, makes you scared for the characters, makes you rejoice at their successes, and puts a smile on your face as you walk out of the theater. Terrific. I've seen it twice, and I love this movie.
Nowhere near as good as Casino Royale. Lacks the motivations and character development of that superior movie. The action scenes in this one went from horrible to better, up to the absolutely bravura action scene staged during the opera, Tosca. That was masterful, Hitchcockian, even. Stuff blows up real good at the end, but it's ultimately a sliver of a movie.
I never would have seen this on my own, I saw it with a friend who loves dogs. That said, I really enjoyed how the animators captured a dog's movements, expressions and even emotions. The story was fun and the 3-D was fine and unobtrusive. Would make a great double feature with "The Incredibles". That's the kind of tone this movie has.
Guess Jim is trying to get back into our good graces and back into box office paydirt with this tepid return to the kind of comedy for which he's known. There are a few funny scenes, but on the whole the premise and execution are weak. The mark of a good comedy for me is if it can pull me out of a funk. I've gone to some comedies in this condition, and some have actually pulled me out of it. This one didn't.
