The Lone Ranger is an unexpectedly complicated movie. Being that Disney has its name on it, I was almost flabbergasted at the plot. It addresses greed, hate, destruction and betrayal of the Native Americans in the plains and west, familial loyalty, revenge...quite the opposite of what I expected. From the trailers, interviews, and articles before it was released, I thought it was going to be more about the back stories of John Reid and Tonto and how they develop a relationship despite their differences. There is some of that, but it’s sprinkled and short, and then we're back to the big picture- a history lesson we should all know. I LOVED the directing. The imagery is amazing. The acting is powerful. I definitely want to see it again on the big screen. I guess I should go soon, since the media is making a big statement on how Despicable Me 2 has crushed it in the box office. I think there's really only one reason for that: Americans would rather laugh at silliness than gain a different perspective on our history. Plus, it isn't a feel-good Disney movie. I'm impressed that they took that risk. Overall, I would give it an 8 out of 10. As for the comparison with John Carter, it is absurd- like comparing Neil Young to Justin Bieber. I think people are being misled to think it is a boring, poorly-made film. I will own it when it is released on DVD.
