A spectacular version of F. Scott Fitzgerald's most loved novel, Baz Luhrmann's 3-D extravaganza captures the hectic shallowness of the Roaring Twenties, and particularly of the Buchanans, Daisy and her adulterous husband. Carey Mulligan is first-rate as the soft, pretty object of desire, but the film belongs to Leonardo Di Caprio's Jay Gatsby, a mystery man of power and charm, whose heart provides the lifeblood of the movie.
