The writers didn't stick with Superman canon. He is NOT supposed to kill. The idea of Superman finding a unique way of dealing with a situation, no matter how bad it is, is the underlying tone of the legend. Killing Zod was not the right way. The fact that Jonathon died in a hurricane, is another wrong way turn. These so called writers decide what is right and what is their version doesn't make this move any less better, but Christopher Reeve is the one and only Superman. There was a lot of gratuitous destruction for destruction's sake. Like the Avengers, Manhattan has been destroyed so many times, that it should be considered a war zone and left for dead. Over the top destruction. It was long as well....
