First: Why Russell Crowe? Why, why why?? With whom did he sleep to get this role? Nearly ruined the movie for me. Terrible singer; wooden, passionless performance. He, himself didn't look happy to be there. Ugh.
Next: Hugh Jackman. Meh. His acting was pretty decent, but he just doesn't have the voice to carry the main role in this extravaganza. At times, it was actually painful to listen to him try to hit those high, soaring notes that should make you shiver, but instead made me cringe.
Third: Anne Hathaway should definitely win the Oscar for her heart-rending performance. She left all of herself out there and you feel that she IS suffering, not acting. Outstanding.
Supporting Cast: Sascha Baron-Cohen and Helena Bonham-Carter were perfection, their performances brilliant and bright.
Young Cosette was adorable and more than justified herself as the face of the production. I wanted to adopt Gavroche, he was so winning. Marius and Older Cosette had voices lovely enough to hit all their marks. Eponine was fine. But what the heck did they do to her waist?? The poor thing must have been suffering for real.
The rest of the cast, including the ensemble, were terrific. The anthems were stirring, as they should be, and photographed beautifully.
Cinematography, production design, direction, and art work were all simply gorgeous and ingenius. Those alone made this film worth seeing.
Being an opera, this production really needed an intermission, whether that is currently unpopular for movies, or not. Although most folks can hold their bladders for 2 1/2 hours, I just needed a break from the constant barrage of song after song. It becomes overwhelming and almost hard to follow after an hour. I needed 15 minutes to process it all. While this didn't ruin the experience, it made it a bit tedious at times.
Bottom line: Well worth the price of admission.
Pros great story, gorgeous cinematography
Cons russell crowe
Yes, I recommend this movie.
