Peter Jackson has landed another lunker with the Hobbit movie. Packed with great actions scenes flawless special effects and good acting, the movie is a more than fitting prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Unlike the Trilogy, where Jackson followed the story line of the books and was forced to remove book elements to keep within time constraints, the Hobbit not only incorporates virtually all of the important book elements, but adds other story lines not found in the book, some of which enhance the movie's story, and some that drag a bit, and add needless complications (everyone in our family, for instance, agreed that the segment introducing and incorporating the Brown Wizard was a little clumsy, including the Necromancer part of the line).
All in all, the movie was signature Jackson, from the minute detail of the armor worn by the dwarfs to the nail-biting brawl between immense stone giants during the company's mountain crossing. Add in the realism created by expertly done 3D and the high framing rate at theater we saw the movie in, and you can totally immerse yourself in the Middle Earth experience, if you don't mind a few orc beheadings along the way.
As always, I was left saddened at the final credits by the realization that I would probably have to wait yet another year to again immerse myself in the saga. Looks like the holidays will bring me back to my Director's Cut collection of Lord of the Rings!
