A self gratifying, ego trip for RZA, was the only thing accomplished by this so-called feature. It hit me after only the first five minutes, that I had wasted my $14, and the next 96 minutes of my life.
Russel Crowe was great, as was Liu, but even their superb talents could not save this film, which had the dialogue and voiceovers one would expect to see in a 12 year old's youtube video. There was a point in the movie where RZA retells tragically how he came to Jungle Village, and the audience erupted in laughter. The tone of the film was all over the place. If it was purposefully trying to be cheesy, it even failed at that.
The art direction was fantastic though, which made the storyline and RZA's acting all the more tragic and painful. I would say this film even causes Quentin Tarantino's reputation to be damaged for simply presenting it.
Even the score was depressingly sad. I doubt there was more than 5 seconds of the movie that wasn't overpowered by the lack luster soundtrack of midi and hip-hop. I was excited to see this film, and was willing to give some lee-way to a first time director from the music industry... but I just can't ignore how blatantly awful it was.
Please, take me back to Raid Redemption, and erase this film from my memory.
