There is much to like about this movie but it really doesn't meet the standards that Pixar has set for itself. For one thing, it was just too disconcerting to have the lead character look so much like Spencer Tracy yet sound like Ed Asner. For another, there were far too many liberties taken with plausibility. Still, there are some lovely moments, some genuinely touching ones, a few laugh-out-loud hilarious ones. I especially applaud the makers for making the character Russell Asian.
What a wonderful evening and the best part is that those who didn't get to see it April 23 will have a chance to do so in early May. I laughed. I was deeply touched. I was delighted beyond words. Ira Glass is singularly fantastic.
As a long-time fan of Mike Leigh, I know to expect a rich payoff for my viewing dollar. "Happy Go-Lucky" continues this tradition beautifully. The protagonist is genetically coded to see life's glass as always more than half-full. But better than her willingness to be happy is her openness to and her tolerance for those who are not. Stay, relax and be delighted by an ending that reveals that our heroine has a core of steel underneath all that good cheer.
