Although Astrid Bergès-Frisbey's character Patricia is at the center of "The Well Digger's Daughter," Daniel Auteuil owns the film: he adapted the Marcel Pagnol novel to a screenplay, he directed the piece, and he stars as Patricia's well-meaning, honor-bound, patriarchal father. The father's absolute authority strongly ties the story to a time and place when women were powerless emblems of their families' honor. At the same time, the relationship between father and daughter, and the father's slow journey to understanding, enriches the classic story (poor country girl, compromised by rich boy, loses standing in community) and transforms the ending. The photography is stunningly beautiful, complemented by Alexandre Desplat's sensitive, sweet score.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, excellent music score, beautiful photography
