If you are a fan of the the British comic character, you will be in heaven watching this film. This is the Judge Dreedd I read as a boy growing up and Karl Urban does a brilliant job portraying him, as rough, tough and fair (and don't worry, there is no Walter the robot!). Olivia Thirlby's performance of Judge Anderson is equally mesmerizing, first appearing frail and delicate, but truely as strong and tough as Dreed. The villian, Lena Headey is also brilliant in ruthlessness.
The special effects are really amazing and are hard to describe (unique and breathtaking). The world these characters live in is harsh, grim and ever so real. The film has a real hyper kinetic feel to it, not sure how else to describe it. There is also a great deal of violence, which is to be expected based upon the world these character exist within and the film may not be for the very squemish. I saw a late night showing and missed the 3D version, but I suspect the 3D showing must have been glorious fun. The time flew by watching this and the action never seemed to slow down
I hope they continue with additional sequels and we get to see the Dark Judges eventually, especially Judge Dredd and Jude Anderson versus Judge Death.
Highly recommended, particularly for the fans, but all others will probably enjoy this too.
