Having watched the last 45 minutes of the last HP film in 3-D, I was excited when the director said he thought they'd do the next film in all 3-D. So, I suppose it's partly my fault for just assuming this was how it would be. I was a little surprised when the take your glasses off icon flashed just 12 minutes in, but I thought well we're out of the action for a bit. Surely they will have us put them back on for the Burrow scene or the cave. I mean they certainly had time to spend working on that sort of thing. The final credits rolled and the 3-D had never reappeared. I watched the film 2 weeks ago when it was released. So I was there solely for the 3-D. I'm pretty sure I paid for a lot more than 12 minutes worth...very disappointing.
This film in the series is really there to move the plot forward and set up the final 2, which is where all the real action will be. Despite it's PG rating, I thought this one was less for younger kids than the last. There was less action and lot more talk and background information. My 7 year old was squirming in his seat by 30 minutes in with boredom, but my 10 year old was enraptured by it. It wasn't a perfect film, but it was still well worth seeing if you're following the storyline. If this is your first HP film, please rent the others first or this will make little sense to you. It doesn't really stand alone as a film, like some of the others could.
As a historical film it was interesting, but as a character driven film, there was no one to root for. I keep reading about how Dillinger was this Robin Hood type figure who gave money to the poor and was beloved by many common folk, but I just did not see that in this film. They touched briefly on it a couple times, but not enough for you to develop any kind of sympathy or concern for the character. In some movies that's deliberate, but in this one I think they intended for you to care about him. When the credits rolled at the end, it left me sitting in my seat shrugging and saying "hmm."
I felt overall it had too much side plot going on and not enough primary plot. At times what was happening to all the characters was too muddled and unrealistic. The robots were all so similarly colored that in a fight it was sometimes impossible to tell exactly who was the good guy and who was the bad guy. The action was exciting, but the main plot really needed more bolstering. On a positive note, I felt Shia's acting showed growth. He's always had great comedic timing, but I thought he carried off his seizure-like fits very convincingly and showed growth overall as a film star. It was worth seeing once in the theatre on the big screen. I'm not certain it's worth paying to see a second time, like the first one was.
With ticket prices so high these days, few movies are worth seeing in the theatre, but this is one of them! This is an exciting film with lots of action and humor.
