John C. Reilly and Marisa Tomei are good as always. Jonah Hill shows some dramatic chops here. There are some laughs, but it's primarily a dramatic piece about the triangular relationship between Reilly, Tomei, and Tomei's adult son (Hill). The characters are relatable. The pace and the music are good.
The premise of this installment is a natural progression from the first 2 films. Andy is not a child any more. He is going away to college, and he no longer needs the toys. The franchise's main characters return, with a few additions--the Ken doll being the most notable. The movie offers a lot of laughs, and I must admit I shed a few tears at the end.
I'm a big Will Smith fan, and I enjoyed his performance in the film. But the first hour dragged for me. It is filled with obscure references to earlier events in the form of flashbacks that do little to build suspense or interest. I was frustrated and bored by the midway point. There were some characters I might have liked better if the film had developed them more. Instead, I ended up not caring much about most of them by the end.
This travelogue of 2 men's motorcycle trek across Africa made me want to explore new places and meet new people. Africa is a huge amount of territory to cover in only 2 hours, but this film does a pretty good job of it, and it left me wanting more.
