Simply wonderful. I never saw the original series, but You really don't need to have since this movie stands on its own merits and is quite entertaining.
Depp is a master of course - its worth it to see him act out this creature. His lines are great especially if you understand a little proper English. The movie is both dark yet light - having a bit of everything and special effects that will shake the ghost out of anyone.
Sad, funny, special effects, surprises throughout - its a great time at the movies.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, great movie-making

This is a great movie for us navy fans out there - it has the feel of a navy promo at times and the latter tie in to the "past" a bit gratuitous, but all in all, it is just plain fun!
You can't help but fill will exuberance to see the mighty ship battle with its alien nemesis. The power of this movie is akin to the power of the battleship herself and strong spirits that bring her might to bear on the alien ships.
In general, I feel that the battle ending was too abruptly transitioned to the standard naval ceremony and celebratory recognitions of valor etc. for our unlikely heroes. Which for me was disappointing really after such a climax. But I guess time and budgets played a role - I would love to see the director's cut,
The movie at certain points risks getting quaint in the way it struggles to stay believable which is why a few people may not of appreciated this movie. But if you like anything naval and sci-fi, then this combo is a blast!
Pros well paced, great story, strong characters, overcoming challenges, liam nelson : )
