I was lucky enough to be at the concert the night it was filmed for use in this "3D concert movie." However, after attending what was an incredibly innovative, well-directed and face-paced "live" event (full of energetic and talented performers), the movie left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. Instead of the movie being inter-cut with real-life examples of people who are "different" (and how GLEE, the series might have positively influenced or impacted their lives), I would have loved to have just experienced the concert again, from start to finish (with perhaps a few backstage insights at the beginning or end of the film). More planning should have gone into the project. I think shooting a project on June 17th and then releasing a film less than 2 months after was ambitious and contributed to a lack of focus for any "message" the film may have wanted to convey.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

This film, while a milestone of integration of live-action with computer generated imagery, also brings powerful messages about our species and our culture of waste, greed and military force. It should show our shame in thinking that we can just wipe out people through force for our own goals of greed. I think this film points, in a commerical way, to the direction of being self-aware, that our natural resources are limited and should be treasured and that we are all on this planet together and should work together to save and cherish it. We are, indeed, all connected.
I was told that the story was told in a non-linear fashion which was sort of true but not the core of the experience. Thought it was really funny and the cast was filled with "real" people (as real as a Hollywood venture can be). Somewhat innovative in its story-telling peppered with the "hook" of curiosity based upon the plot. This movie is full of testosterone-ridden, slightly homophobic humor but forgiveable based upon the fact that I don't think it was made for that express purpose - just showing four "buddies" on the night of a bachelor party. Zach Galifianakis was clear standout.
This movie was completely engaging, incredibly well directed and was just a joy to experience. It was wonderful to see a spirited young girl taking charge while also seeking to find what she thinks might be true happiness. I am so glad that Hollywood studios did not give up on the concept of filming in 3-D. While there were not significantly shocking effects utilized through the use of the 3-D effect, it, in turn, helped created a multi-dimensioned world with layers and texture....it was almost like watching a pop-up book come even further to life before your eyes. Selick's direction combined with the 3-D technique were just transformational and fantastic. I think this movie has a little something for everyone.
