This movie had a very interesting premise and a wonderful cast, but the end result fell a bit flat. The direction of the story felt very stunted and predictable. There were some small moments with these great actors (Ford, Oldman, Dryfuss) that were well done, but unfortunately, those moments made up a small portion of the whole. There have just been too many other great movies that examined the effects of greed and wanting to move up in life (i.e. Wallstreet), this felt very two dimensional in comparison. Frankly, it might have been better if Amber Heard's part had been cut out- it's not that she was bad, but her part felt very unnecessary.

Whenever movies like this are made, I always have to wonder if it will be a quality movie, or a forced and predictable ode to a person or event. This was definitely a quality movie; it wasn't forced in any way and the cast had a wonderful chemistry. I particularly liked the wonderful performances of some outstanding actors as former presidents. (Alan RIckman does a freakishly accurate Regan!) I also liked how the movie compared Cecil's (the butler) journey with his son Louis' as they both worked to change things in their own, different ways. Very well done!

This movie definitely had potential- the cast was great, the effects were great, and the story was interesting. I had one big problem with it- the previews made it look like there would be a lot more action. The final fight was pretty anticlimactic. Considering all the buildup, I expected more than a five minute fight scene.

I am usually critical of movie adaptations of books I have read, but this one surprised me. While someone who hasn't read the books might find it pretty rushed, I think that anyone who did read them will enjoy it. They definitely toned down the violence from what it could have been, but obviously they are targeting a teen audience, so that isn't a surprise. I thought the casting was great and visually most everything looked just how I pictured it. Great job- I can't wait for the other two!!!
