The folly of Men's Health Magazine recently naming Jennifer Anniston as the sexiest woman of all time becomes crystal clear in this moving and lyrical film that purports to depict a week in the life of the iconic Goddess, Marilyn Monroe. Michelle Williams is Oscar-worthy in this role. The film gently and insightfully shows why Monroe was a Goddess. It's a lovely rumination on the seductiveness, perils and toxicity of celebrity.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

It's batting .286 with a .333 on-base pct.

Women will love watching Brad Pitt; baseball fans will love the subject matter. A well-built film with good acting, direction, production values...Overly long screen-play suffering from bad editing both before and after the shoot. More fine performances from Jonah Hill and Philip Seymour Hoffman. The entire movie goes by without learning what Beane's theory of baseball is, other than a love of on-base percentage. If this is the best movie of the year we're in trouble.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Slow, plodding

Jane Eyre is a slow moving story to begin with. This version is really slow, and doesn't emphasize enough the "tales of woe" and the scary aspects of its Gothic plot to drive the movie's plot and fill it with suspense. Aside from Ms. Wasikowska the acting performances are second-rate. The scenery of rural England is breathtaking.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

An implausible, somewhat slow attempt at a suspense thriller that features a confused Liam Neeson -- not just his character, but the way he portrays him -- and a January Jones devoid of sex appeal, as impossible as that may sound. Horrible plot, made worse by poor construction. Bad acting all the way around except for the unknown character actor who plays a retired East German intelligence operative. Don't see it in the theater.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

It's got Angelina Jolie, Johnnie Depp and locations in Venice and Paris. What's not to like? Well, the acting is lackluster, the UN-sexual chemistry almost makes you feel they toned down their feelings so as not to create a tabloid hell for Brangelina...The music sucks, as does the direction, and the plot is farfetched...But so what? It's a romp through Venice with two gorgeous actors. Actually, every human in the cast is good looking. I left the theater entertained for two hours.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Denzel must have needed some money to have agreed to appear in this relentless and loud actioner with trite subplots of a redneck marriage in trouble (his cab-mate, the conductor) and Denzel as a single father using the emergency radio to HQ with just enough to suggest a potential romance with babelicious female lead Rosario Dawson, in the tritest way possible...if you like trains go see it...Completely ungeographic and phony depiction of the Pennsylvania country side...
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Skillfully written and acted recreation of the Bush administration's crimes against the U.S. It may seem harsh to express it that way, but there is no other way to characterize the outing of a CIA operative. It borders on treason, and the proof of the pudding is that the administration used Scooter Libby as its patsy; convicted, with his sentence later commuted, but not -- to VP Cheney's exasperated chagrin -- pardoned by Bush. The movie shows how Bush started the Iraq war based upon a lie. High crimes and misdemeanors occurred at the highest levels of government, and the tournequet was applied with Libby's amputation. The seriousness of their crimes, and its impact on innocent lives, including Iraqi cooperators who were killed by the CIA's complicity in the conspiracy, is brought home with power. Republicans will either hate it, or not understand it, and certainly not want to accept it, ie. the truth.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The King's Speech

Fabulously well-written and acted depiction of the little-known story behind King George VI's struggle to overcome his stammer in order to have the credibility and ability to lead Britain and sustain its morale in its hour of challenge against the Nazis. Pearce or Firth give Oscar-worthy performances, and both may be nominated. Helena Bonham Carter and the rest of the cast are superb. A moving, funny, fascinating retelling of history's little moments adding up to a very big moment.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Black Swan

A harrowing tale of a ballerina threatened by an overbearing mother, envious dancers in her company and a sexually aggressive ballet-master. The pressures build to a crescendo with the subject matter of the ballet -- Swan Lake -- mirroring her predicament with its themes of erotic awakening, illusion, deception, and death. Portman will be nominated for, and may win, the Oscar for best acting with her tour de force performance.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

A real-life "Platoon" that asks and answers the questions, "Why are we fighting in Afghanistan?" and "Can we be successful?"
Why? No good reason other than Obama fears losing reelection if the Taliban retake the country before 2012.
Can we succeed? No.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
