As a Naval Aviator I greatly anticipated the opening of "Red Tails." What I found was a movie that was filled with great action (albeit computer generated), horrible acting, and an insanely predictable storyline. Red Tails was a mix of "Glory" meets "Top Gun" meets an elementary school play. The air combat action scenes allowed me time to recover from the vastly undeveloped multitude of subplots (to many to count), and lines delivered as if the actor was seeing the script for the first time (in the dark). For example, after being protected for seemingly the first time by the Red Tail squadron, a B-17 bomber pilot states painfully, "Man....I.....Hope....We....Get...Escorted....By....Those.....Red.....Tails.....Again." Yes, we get it, George, the Red Tails won the war. ...And please don't get me started on the gratuitous racist stereotypes thrown in just for affect. At times I was waiting for the laugh track. But overall, the action scenes in Red Tails thankfully, mercifully, allowed me to forgive the sins of liberal Hollywood, and I actually enjoyed the movie. And yes... see it on the big screen, the air combat scenes will lose much of their power at home.
