My children and I have loved this movie ever since we saw it in an earlier English-language release on scratchy VHS. We were thrilled to have the chance to see it in a theater. My oldest is now 20. But we are still, collectively, entranced. The animation is stunning. The story is beautifully told, very warm and humane. Totoro is irresistible, yet slightly scary; powerful yet childlike. The cat bus rocks. The family is wonderfully drawn, and if you are tired of the American movie cliche of clueless useless dads, here is a dad who is funny, does laundry, and "gets" his kids in the deepest way.
