Chris Hemsworth is a GOD!

Forget the imax 3D thing. Mostly it was blurry from the reflection off the glasses and difficult to follow all the action they had done so much layering, unless you sat so far back the screen was as small as a tv. BUT...Chris Hemsworth in leather pants? Worth the ticket price alone! And the movie didn't take itself too seriously which let you sink into it easier. Great flick, good cast, lots of fun! And they didn't make the mistake so many others have and waste the movie's screentime with stupid romance crap. There was just a taste of it, just enough to add a little depth and not take time from the action.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Good, but for Edward's portrayal

It took me a while to pinpoint why I didn't enjoy the movie as much as I thought I should. With one exception, the cast was excellent. Better directing than last time, and overall quite good. Carlisle no longer is in white clown makeup with a clearly visible line on his chin, an improvement over Twilight.Taylor Lautner as Jacob is not only spot-on, he has blossomed into the heartthrob Jacob is supposed to be. The problem is Robert Pattinson, who plays the playful, joking, passionate Edward as a stone. Never pretty enough for the role, he now drags the entire movie down with his utterly flat style. He must be replaced for the next two movies to soar.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

A new legend from the ashes

I commend Abrams for an even hand througout, delivering action, humor, and human interest with equal aplomb. Neither a parody nor a clone, this movie manages to refresh the legend while renewing it. The cast manages to make their own statement while including nonobsequious nods and nuances tying them to the tradition. I can't think of anything about this movie I didn't like. While I have a deep love of the old cast I have not felt closer to the characters since the end of the original series. We have the real essence of the characters in shiny new boxes, bringing us home comfortably once again with the Kirk, Spock and others we know and love so well. A fast-paced visual feast, this is truer to the old series than any other Trek movie.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Uneven at best, misdirected at worst

I liked the movie, but Robert Pattinson was too flat and wooden for the role. Some bad script choices (i.e., meals at the cafe instead of Bella cooking) hurt the plot. The focus on creating mood moments came at the expense of more detail and plot. I saw no evidence of the playful, impish Edward so central to the book. Poor makeup (Carlisle looked like he was wearing clown makeup, the line clearly visible on his neck) hurt. The scenery was lovely but not a point of the book, in which only its gloominess and chill and the occasional sunny days were. The 'tree scenes' were a total waste.
Good: Kristen Stewart was right on as Bella, as were Edward's family. Cam Gigandet as James was stellar, bringing needed drama to a slow and flat movie.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Car chase heaven

What makes a man good or evil? What are good and evil? What is a hero? Deeper questions than most action flicks ask are probed by this movie dominated by action sequences some of which are so frenetic it is impossible to see what is actually going on. Though this leaves one at the edge of one's seat, it is not as fulfilling as clearer action could be. One has a sense of looking at a very complex painting the size of a house from a distance of a mile and trying to figure out what's in the details. And sure, the car is neat - but ho-hum after the first few shots. Gary Oldman as Gordon is too understated in his prtrayal; Christian Bale tries too hard to be the tough guy image in his Batman guise, almost a caricature of the old classic-movie toughs who make us laugh today with their self-parodying portrayals; his also made me chukle. But the movie does lose that 'this is Batman' quality some of the earlier ones had, and you really forget he is the 'hero' of the movie and fear for him - which allows some drama and suspense to enter.
Heath Ledger is the star of this movie; no trace of the actor can be found within the utterly consuming Joker character. His madness is all the more frightening because is seems so matter-of-fact, so next-door. His evil offers a new facet to the conundrums the movie tries to explore. Aaron Eckhart unfortunately plays 'Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent', and you never forget it is simply Aaron Eckhart and his character never comes out of that shadow - until the ending scenes. The subplot of the creation of 'Two-Face' is a masterful touch in this uneven movie, and his presentation of the changed Harvey is convincing and disturbing for its suddenness and reality.
Enjoy Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine in their too-brief scenes and take in the visuals. These, together with Ledger's Joker and Eckhart's final transformation redeem this movie in which Batman seems more of a plot device than the central point.
A must-see if only for these reasons; and of course the last chance to see a truly great actor (a rarity in a Hollywood devoted only to prettiness and not skill) at the height of his craft - Heath Ledger!
Yes, I recommend this movie.
