I really loved it. I was surprised they made it a PG13 movie since the books were so gory... but I think they pulled it off well. I wanted action and I got it without being over the top. The movie made me jump a couple times and there was character depth, which I was glad to see (not just some fight-only movie, but much more). I've read the first two books and I still wasn't disappointed after seeing the movie. There are some things that aren't maybe explained in depth for those who haven't read the books, but they covered A LOT of the book and even I could tell that the movie was bursting from the seams with all of the story they put in there --which I LOVED by the way. I think they made a perfect balance. Don't overload the audience that hasn't seen the book, but still include so much that those who HAVE read it, know and understand the little details others wouldn't get. Great job guys, the movie was totally worth staying up all night to watch the midnight showing-- and I would do it again, too. :)
The only way it could have been better is if the theater security had walked around with bow and arrows of their own! lol, it really was great. And great moral, too. LOVED IT.
Also, I don't think I was the only one who enjoyed it--I think the entire theater crowd was in agreement. :)
Yes, I recommend this movie.

WORTH SEEING

I wasn't actually planning on seeing this movie in the first place. I was on the fence between seeing 50/50 or some other shoot-em-up movie, when I saw that Courageous was playing. At first I thought, "well, it's probably only 45mins or so, so I can always buy it later and see a 'better' movie in the theater." Of course, then I realized that the movie is 2 HOURS long. What in the world could be in it? So, curiosity raised, I went to see it. And I was NOT disappointed.
It was a great movie. First of all, how many Christian movies actually EXIST in theaters?? I don't think I've ever seen one in my lifetime and I'm 20 years old. All that comes to mind is The Passion and that's about it.
Second, there's a great moral. There have been TONS of movies forcing other views down our throats while subtly stabbing at Christianity (I'm a girl in college... needless to say, I get a lot of digging at me b/c I'm Christian and won't go somewhere and get drunk, I won't believe that some how "all roads lead to God" b/c Jesus says he's the ONLY way. And, of course, I won't just willy-nilly date guys to have sex... like casual sex outside of marriage is okay now b/c society 'accepts' it. Most movies advocate this and it's really discouraging. I swear, people are TRYING to get me to fail, but that's the World for you).
I understand what it's like to be around failure fathers as well as "courageous" ones. I have never seen a moral for a movie that is so relevant and practical for this day and age. It's something I never even considered, but so so true. There are so many broken families out there, with fathers being a core issue. I'm one of them. And I'm pretty sure that every friend I have has divorced families. It hurts to think about it.
Also, I was surprised by how much action and comedy was put in it. Javier in the back of the police car with a gang banger? TOTALLY HILARIOUS. I know it's not just me because the rest of the crowd in the theater was dying from laughter too. The idea of the story centering on police officers, fatherhood, and courage is very central to the story and fits PERFECTLY together. It just gives me a good feeling thinking about those ideas circling together right now.
Also, Courageous is a tear-jerker. I mean, I know I'm a girl, but I don't cry over the drop of a hat. This movie, though, brings the rain (trying to keep the mascara from running was a hopeless battle from the start.
So the reason I love this movie the most? It hits right where the home is. Literally. Looking at the story and the characters and the families, I think "That's me. That's my life. It hurts me because that's how I'VE been hurt before." What more could you ask from a movie? Of course, characters make different (better or worse) choices than I've made in reaction to those events in my life, but that doesn't lessen the meaning. You get examples of how you should act, how you shouldn't act, how things could be, and etc.
I know the movie's kinda long looking, but like the title says, it's WORTH SEEING every second. Choosing between a shoot-em-up and a movie that could change your view on life is no contest. Courageous all the way.
It's so encouraging to know that I'm not alone in my faith. And that there are others who are willing to step up in their God-given gifts to help those around them (including me).
It all boils down to... God created families. He would know what's best and how families SHOULD be. No, we humans aren't perfect, but other people shouldn't point their fingers at us just because one person makes a mistake and say, "See there! They're a hypocrite and so is Christianity."
The point of being Christian isn't to be perfect. It's to accept our faults. We're sinners who need to be saved by Perfection, Christ, on a cross. Nothing more or less. Like it or not, this is it.
And God, OUR Father in Heaven is a perfect Father and is what every father SHOULD be. And that is what He is calling for all the men in this World. It's all over the book of Joshua. To be strong and courageous in order to serve the Lord and their families as leaders in the position God has given them.
Wow. What a message. And it's all jam-packed in this movie in a heart-to-heart explanation between the viewer and the actor on screen. Thanks so much for making this movie and putting it in theaters. I hope to see it again in theaters before it leaves. I hope that others enjoy it as much as I have.
From one viewer to another--go see this movie. It's worth every second.
