Anime is different

For those who have not seen this Japanese-style animation called Anime, a note: It is not just that the figures are drawn differently, Anime is just strange. There was long periods where you had to wonder who the characters were and what on earth they were doing. I still have no idea WHAT or WHO Ponyo's parents were supposed to be. I left the movie feeling like I had just experienced an LSD trip. I would have left the movie, but for the fact that my kids were enjoying it. So it at least gave them a day of entertainment. there wasn't anything patricularly objectionable, unless you don't want to expose your kids to Eastern mysticism themes. But I'd tell parents to wait for DVD so they can go get a root canal while the kids are watching!
No, I do not recommend this movie.

All I can say is, WOW! What a pleasant surprise! This movie is just great! It is suspenseful and exciting, without all the ridiculous prolonged shootouts and "witty" banter too many action movies have these days. Liam Neeson is the perfect "everyman" for this role. The audience at our theater was cheering and clapping at some scenes. While there is violence, it is not unnecessarily bloody - it is rated PG-13. Liam Neeson's hero is better than any James Bond I have seen in the last 10+ years.
SEE THIS MOVIE!

The movie is pretty slow moving and does not have a plot, technically speaking. The photography is beautiful and it is a beautiful movie to look AT. However, I had a hard time understanding or sympathizing with this main character. He abandons his family without a trace, and they greive terribly for him, but he makes no move to contact them. All because his parents are, in his eyes, mean and materialistic. The movie hints at the terrible marriage his parents had, but it never seems so bad to necessitate withdrawing from all society. People with a bit of courage and determination have overcome far worse.
In the end, my thought was - what a stupid kid! Overall, not a BAD movie, but I would wait for DVD.
No, I do not recommend this movie.
