Most of the hype concerning Avatar has rightly been about the fabulous special effects. And they are even better than forecast, especially in IMax 3D. Avatar is worth seeing for the effects alone, as movies for years will attempt to match them and will likely fall short. Unfortunately, the plot of the story is rather pedestrian, with 3D characters developed no deeper than the 1st dimension.
Okay---what's Woody always write about? The artiste, fascinated with sex, and worried about life and death. Well, he's still there, but this time with a Spanish twist. Barcelona is a beautiful city, and we see much of it, ala Manhattan. The acting fits the parts from all the leads, with special kudos to Bardem and Cruz. Some of the lines reminded me of Annie Hall, in content and delivery. Nevertheless, if you are a Woody fan, it's worth seeing.
One couldn't miss the hype for the Dark Knight--it's been everywhere. BUT not one bit of it is a lie. Heath Ledger really does give a remarkable new depth to the Joker--you cannnot help but feel the total lack of morality down into your bones. He is one bad clown. Christian Bale is a cool, multi-layered Bruce Wayne--you can see the battle of good and bad going on internally in every scene. Aaron Eckhart---so swarmy, so handsome, so deficient. Maggie Gyllenhaal is a sexy, complete Rachel. It'll keep you on the edge of your seat!!
As I watched WALL-E, I couldn't help but think of Charlie Chaplin's Little Tramp. Without words, you see into the heart of this little robot, who is so dedicated to his useless job, until he sees the love of his life. The compassion and, yes, the humanity, of WALL-E shines through the rather bleak world in which he lives. Yes, the animation is fabulous, but I forgot the fact that this was a cartoon because the film so excellently develops its characters through the little things that anyone does. Well worth the money--there's something for every age!
A perfect summer movie. It reminds me of the type of serials that they used to show at the Saturday morning matinees; lots of action, some humor and a complete escape from reality.
