This movie lived up to the hype. It has everything I enjoy in a summer blockbuster, PLUS actual war veterans and sailors! One of the important stars was a disabled vet who, while obviously not an actor, did an incredible job alongside the pros, and was an integral part of saving the planet. Actual retired war vets were brought in toward the end to also risk their lives and save the world. Mixing reality and fantasy made this movie as fun as it can get.
I gave it 3 stars for story for one reason only: it was not 100% clear what the aliens' intentions were. The audience was left wondering did they come to conquer? Were they calling for help or for more forces? Some of my friends actually felt sorry for the aliens because they "didn't want to kill humans." I disagree, but I wish it had been made more clear.
I will buy this on DVD!

The movie was so awful. I am SO majorly disappointed. For humorous effect, Pegg (writer/actor) took potshots at God, Jesus, and Christians throughout the movie. The vitriol against this group specifically was so great that it was like the writers were trying to teach people their religion of "there is no God".
The Christian character is "delivered" of her faith when the alien touches her and filled her with his knowledge. Suddenly a "weight is lifted off of her" as she "realizes" that there's no sin, no heaven, no hell, and all that--she'll just f**k all the time and do whatever she wants. Then she proceeds to speak in curse words the rest of the movie. Suddenly enlightened, she takes off her Cross Necklace. Unbelievably, she tells another character, "Thank you. I was blind, but you helped me see."
I'm no movie prude, but I don't go to the movies to be taught a new religion--not any religion. This movie is blatant propaganda for staunch atheism, with no-holds-barred slamming (by name) Christians and the God of the Judeo/Christian Scriptures).
I can only recommend this movie to people who hate God already. You will love it a lot.
