Maybe not quite the 5.0 stars I gave it (to make up for the 1 star nonsense) but awesome all the same and not far off it, 4+.
A stylish, intriguing action/spy thriller.
For once, the female actually looks like she could be taking on and defeating the guys she is up against, 100% for real (which is probably not surprising considering that in real life she surely could take down any of the guys in the film I'd bet). The camera certainly likes her every bit as much as any typical actress too. And she played the part well, not sure what people expected to see this sort of character act like.
A nice mix of serious action with a bit of humor (some of the scenes with the kid from the diner).
Nicely told with timeline flashing back and forth until past finally meets present for the last half of the movie. Nice in the mix style of directing, not quite the usual fair.
Not that I didn't like M.I. - G.P., but this one certainly didn't have any of the stuff where a quick pasted on fake mustache lets you walk straight into the Kremlin hah.
I don't know what sort of audiences some of the people writing the reviews here have, but nobody was laughing at the movie (at inappropriate times that is, a few scenes did have a bit of humor mixed in and got reaction) or falling asleep (?!) at the theater I went to, very safe to say. Nobody walked out early. A lot of people were even sitting through credits talking about it. Listening to audience reaction during the film it sure seemed to go over well at my theater.
As for comments like "I think I lost 2 or more IQ points after leaving this movie. The movie never tells what the real gist of the movie is and then it ends just as bad as it begins." it seems to me that maybe 2 or more IQ points were already missing before entering the theater if you couldn't get the gist of it even by the end. As for the film ending as badly as it began, come on, the final flash scene, right as it snaps to credits, was cool!
Here's hoping for a Haywire 2.
Awesome film.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Great movie. Charlize Theron did a fantastic job and really conveyed every last little emotion. Well written, directed and acted. I certainly didn't sense any negative buzz from audience members as they left the theater, far from it. My sense while watching it was that it was going over quite well with the audience. It wasn't quite as crowded as I had expected though. Anyway, I guess it depends where you see it and with what sort of crowd. It went over fine in my suburban NJ theater though.
It wasn't all black and white and 100% Hollywood wrapped up but a lot more real than that. It was nice to have something just let to play out naturally as it did. funny, sad, engaging
Go in and with an open mind and and take it for what it is and don't get mad it's not some regular old comedy that is not really what it is about.
It was great to see it on the big screen again (however disturbing that it's the 25th and not 5th anniversary hah)! The old 80s flicks rocked! So glad AMC has been having all these retro 80s nights.
Looks great on a giant screen. Big crowd, audience was really into it.
Ton of big names, many relatively near the start or their careers.
(I'm not sure what the few complaining about the image quality and grain are talking about. It was shot on film, often under very low light conditions so of course it will have some grain. The only way to remove grain is to -remove detail- and make it look like a waxy DVD or VHS tape (my god PLEASE don't give them HORRIBLE ideas!). Looked BETTER than the blu-ray since less compression.
And at my theater, at least, you couldn't possible have wanted any more volume (maybe a little less actually since it's hours later and my hearing is still not back to normal....))
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Very well scripted, edited, directed, acted.
Excellent job with something that at very first glance you might not expect to have been able to have been turned into such a good film.
Not quite as unique as Black Swan or quite as enjoyable as True Grit but absolutely one of the year's very top films.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I can't say that I have ever been particularly drawn to the westerns genre but I really loved this film.
Jeff Bridges did a great job as the Rooster.
Matt Damon managed to give his character a bit substance an interest than in the older version and somehow managed to do so by going sort of over the top without actually doing so and making it play like he had pushed it too far so it worked.
Hailee Steinfeld was absolutely wonderful and more than held her own against the well regarded and vastly more experienced Bridges and Damon. What a breakout role! She handled the tricky dialogue with aplomb and transformed from super confident in control nothing can stop me spunky kid genius to shaken and momentarily traumatized little kid and back on a dime. Despite being nominated for a supporting role it was as clear a leading role as could be. Truly wonderful performance.
It felt like there might have been a little awkwardly edited out during the adventure since just as it seemed to becoming as sweeping and long as it should be it was over. So I might have liked just a little more length to the film.
But it was fantastic.
(One little part was a bit gruesome but I guess the Coens tend to not ever shy away from showing what happens.)
Anyway this may well have been my pick for best picture of the year at the 2011 Oscars had I counted for all the votes hah.
I think redbeard said it pretty well above but, anyway, to say it less well and at much greater length (hey, it's me):
More than just being set in the 80's, it even half-way felt like an actual 80's movie, like more about making a movie old school than simply about being a movie about old school (although it definitely had some modern movie feel mixed in too for sure).
As redbeard said above, Topher Grace and Teresa Palmer were totally likable and had good chemistry together, really made it all work. It definitely had a lot of that typical 80's heart underneath all the R-ratedness and craziness, a lot more than most modern R-rated comedies that go along these lines.
Sort of like a mix in thirds of an 80's and a current day R-rated teens/twenties comedy flick and a John Hughes film.
I was really hoping to like it in addition to simply getting to soak in at least a little bit of nostalgia (entered HS just after movie was set). I wasn't quite sure what to expect since the reviews were all over from whatever to fantastic and the trailer seemed a little flat and hard to get a really good sense from but I really enjoyed it. It was even better than I expected (the trailer, actually didn't, at all, end up being like effectively the entire movie, rare for a comedy). It had a sweetness underneath all the rawness and brought plenty of laughs.
Teresa Palmer. Good.
It seemed to go over very well across all ages judging by audience reaction throughout the theater as best I could tell. Just in case you heard mention, don't be worried by the long delay to theatrical release. In this case it was delayed solely by studio suddenly getting cold feet over depicted usage and had nothing to do with qualms about quality.
Anna Faris deserves mention for a fine job in support as Matt's sister and Dan Fogler brought plenty of laughs and over-the-top nuttiness along as the misfit side-kick.
So hey give it watch.
comment winning combo of less well and far greater length fade to black.....
