It's All About Streep

The only reason to see this thin and poorly constructed 'biography' is to see Meryl's Streep rich portrayal of the controversial Margaret Thatcher. The performances are uniformly excellent, however the conceit of telling her vast story from the perspective of her waning, confused latter life outside the public eye just doesn't work. Her memories as told from this perspective create a disjointed patchwork of her life's experiences, never achieving a sense of how this woman reached such historic pinnacles. Nor do you get an insight as to her inner life and how it informed her work and relationships. The revelation of Meryl Streep is that she can take such weak material and somehow manage to create yet another layered, mesmerizing performance. She slips into the skin of Thatcher so well that you almost completely forget you are watching an actress. The reality is that you are watching a national treasure, and again, for that reason alone, this is worth seeing. On DVD at home.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Steven Soderbergh wastes no time in getting the tension going from the very beginning of this taut, suspenseful, almost documentary-like drama. A-list actors Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, and Laurence Fishburne, all excellent, take a back seat to the gripping, 'could be true' story of the evolution of a highly contagious bug that travels the world with frightening speed. You will find yourself backing away if your neighbor at the multi-plex sneezes as the reality of the situation unfolds on screen. It all happens very quickly, and if there is a problem with the movie, it does not develop the characters well enough for you to really care about them. But as Soderbergh cleverly twists and turns his tale to its ironic finish, you can't help but be drawn in to this thought-provoking, intense thriller.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Great performances and excellent writing and direction make this a must see. Topical enough to make you feel 'in the moment' yet also a classic cautionary tale and fascinating biography. The 'Citizen Kane' of this generation.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I am not really a "Batman" or comic book fan, but I I thought this was excellent from start to finish. Though long, it continues to hold your interest. Violent but not gory, with a lot of fun plot twists, and good performances all around. You don't even realize you're watching Heath Ledger; he totally disappears into the role brilliantly. A sad farewell to a promising career.
Highly recommended!
