Usually when Ron Howard is associated with a movie it is worth the price of admission. Not so here. In spite of an impressive comedic cast, this movie is cliched and hackneyed, predictable and not even all that funny. It falls Into the "if you are determined to see it, wait until it won't cost a lot of money" category for me.
This is the beautifully acted and crafted account of a great and unlikely friendship that grows between the future King of England, George VI, aka Bertie, and his speech therapist, Lionel. While the story is set against the backdrop of Bertie's brother's abdication of the throne for the woman he loved, and the rising threat of Hitler in Europe, It is timeless and endearing, elevating and empowering with poignant overtones of universal truth. The audience broke into spontaneous applause at the end. It is a terrific movie.
